Within Nature is collaborating with Iwi, Marae and the local community as they actively practice and share Te Ao Māori frameworks and indigenous knowledge. They are now creating a 1-acre food forest, professionally designed to educate our rangatahi to combine the rhythms of Maramataka, which literally means ‘the moon turning,’ aligning with the Māori lunar calendar, and Mara kai, the traditional Māori knowledge of cultivating/ gardening for food. They see Mara kai as a means of preserving traditional Māori knowledge and practices around food cultivation, preparation, and consumption and passing on this valuable cultural knowledge to future generations. Its focus is a pathway that promotes love of place, belonging, environmental sustainability and cultural preservation. By working with rangatahi they are responding to the pressing need to address the challenges faced by Northland's youth, instilling in them the awareness of improving the land through regeneration instead of exploiting its resources. For more information, go to Within Nature’s Facebook page or website.
