Community Funding Strengthens Oakura First Response Unit

In February this year, Craigs Investment Partners donated $10,000 to help support flood and disaster relief efforts following severe weather events in Northland.

After working closely with the community at Oakura to understand their needs following the extreme weather, half of the donation went to Task Force Kiwi who helped in the immediate recovery. The other half along with a top-up of funds from the Northland Emergency Response Fund went to the Oakura First Response Unit.

The Unit was formed in 2018 by local residents after the volunteer fire service was disbanded. After the weather event, the Unit requested specialised pumps that could pump storm water containing large amounts of sediment, a need that had become clear following the floods.

The response unit is funded from local community donations, and the team and community expressed gratitude to Northland Community Foundation and Craigs for helping fund the new equipment. The First Response Unit told the Foundation, “the newly acquired pumps were put to the test in late March when another rainstorm flooded several properties, and quick action by volunteers managed to prevent water entering residences.”

Northland Community Foundation is building an Emergency Response Fund to help communities better prepare for emergencies. You can help build the Fund by donating today.
