Our History

Where it began

In 2004, a group of passionate locals came together with a vision: to create a foundation for the people of Northland, by the people of Northland. From that vision, Northland Community Foundation was born.

Since our founding, we’ve worked tirelessly to inspire and nurture generosity across our region, creating opportunities for individuals, families, and businesses to give back in meaningful ways.

A Milestone of Hope

Project Promise

One of the defining moments in our history was our partnership with Northland DHB (now Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Te Tai Tokerau) on the groundbreaking “Project Promise” campaign. Together with the support of our generous community, we raised the funds needed to build the Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre, a vital place of hope and care for Northlanders facing cancer.

The success of Project Promise demonstrated the power of community generosity and highlighted Northland Community Foundation’s ability to bring people together for a shared purpose. Today, we continue to honour this legacy by managing charitable services for Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Te Tai Tokerau, raising funds for projects beyond government funding to benefit the health needs of all Northlanders.

Our Funds

A Network of Support

Our growth and success have been guided by key partnerships. The Tindall Foundation, championed by Sir Stephen Tindall, played a pivotal role in establishing Northland Community Foundation. We remain grateful for their ongoing support and each year we continue to deliver some of their funding to projects that benefit our region.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Te Tai Tokerau has also been a steadfast partner, helping us address health and well-being across Northland. Together with our donors, partners, and communities, we are building a brighter, more connected future.

Expanding Our Reach

Northland Community Foundation has grown into a trusted hub for compassion, connecting donors with charitable and community causes that are close to their hearts. From supporting education and the environment to championing art, culture, and sport, we strive to address the needs of Northland.

Through both endowment funds and living giving, we continue to create opportunities for generosity that last a lifetime. By investing donations and distributing the returns annually, we ensure gifts have a long-term impact, supporting the people and places of Northland for generations to come.
