The Whangārei Children’s Ward and Neonatal Unit, opened in April 2024, was supported by a successful community fundraising campaign led by Northland Community Foundation and Health NZ Te Tai Tokerau. Ongoing donations help maintain a warm, family-friendly environment with essential equipment, toys, and comfort items for tamariki and their whānau.
The new Paediatric Inpatient (Children’s) Ward and Neonatal Unit at Whangārei Hospital officially opened in April 2024, following a community-driven fundraising campaign run by Northland Community Foundation in partnership with Health NZ Te Tai Tokerau. From 2022–2024, $257,000 was raised to fund vital "optional extras" that enhance the comfort and wellbeing of children and their families. These included sofa beds for caregivers, TVs, playroom toys and games, and extra medical equipment.
Generous support came from local trusts, organisations such as the Oxford Sports Trust and Lottery Grants Board, and numerous individual donors. Many of these generous donors are honoured in an artwork at the ward’s entrance. While the initial fundraising campaign has concluded, ongoing donations are needed to maintain and refresh furnishings, toys, and equipment, ensuring the ward remains a welcoming and supportive environment. Community contributions continue to play a vital role in helping Whangārei’s youngest patients and their families feel safe, comforted, and cared for.
