Our rural hospitals provide a vital service for those who live in the furthest reaches of Te Tai Tokerau and Kaitaia Hospital is a great example, having fought and won a long battle against closure in the past. The 26-bed hospital has a general ward, maternity and paediatric ward with all the supporting services, and also provides a substantial community health service.
A recent donation to the Kaitaia Hospital Fund was given in thanks for the wonderful care provided by the staff, and was used to fund a Matariki ball, including kai and special gifts. A second gift was used to purchase a chemotherapy chair for the cancer treatment unit at the hospital.
