Bay of Islands Hospital

The Bay of Islands Hospital is located in Kawakawa and provides care to the people of the Bay of Islands and the Mid North.

The humble beginnings of the Bay of Islands Hospital began many years ago in 1911 with the formation of The Bay of Islands Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and a seeding fund of £150. The final cost of building the hospital was £1,836. The Bay of Islands Hospital was officially opened on the 17 January 1913, by MP Vernon H. Reed.

Since 2016 the campus has undergone significant redevelopment. It has seen upgraded and improved service with a 9 bed ED a 20 bed general ward, new renal dialysis unit and Outpatient department. Ngāti Hine Health Trust also opened their new Primary Care practice on campus in 2023. Previous donations to the Bay of Islands Hospital Fund have provided commercial grade exercise equipment and respiratory devices, particularly for patients in the Better Breathing programme, but also for other patients in need of physical rehabilitation.  Other donations have provided recliner chairs, staff lunches, and furniture, toys and books for a children's corner.
